Commentary (Sri Lanka innings)

Right then! After a total drubbing in the Tests, Sri Lanka have bounced back in the T20Is to win the series. Arguably, mostly due to South Africa's complacency but then they will take it. The two teams now lock horns in a 5-match ODI series starting from Saturday, 28th January, 2017 at 1000 local (0800 GMT) in Port Elizabeth. The Lankans definitely have the momentum but expect the Proteas to bounce back like a wounded lion. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!

Sri Lanka skipper, Dinesh Chandimal says that after a poor result in the Tests, they wanted to get back to winning ways. They did that in the 2nd T20I and wanted to take the momentum into the third. Praises Dickwella and Sandakan for their performances in the whole series. Also acknowledges the performance of Mathews in the second T20I. Appreciates today's performances of Prasanna and Gunaratne. Ends by saying that he is looking forward for the one-dayers.

Man of the Match and Man of the Series, Niroshan Dickwella says it's his first time in South Africa and it felt great to play under these conditions. He says that he wanted to take advantage of the first six overs and then bat as long as possible for his team. He adds that he likes to play according to his strength on being asked about his cheeky shots. Appreciates the South African wickets as they were good batting tracks. Ends by saying that he is happy as he did his job for his team.

South Africa skipper Farhaan Behardien feels that they had enough on board. He says the camp wanted to do better with the bat after the 2nd T20I. Blames those dropped catches which proved costly. Also feels that losing Ngidi was a huge blow as they had to fill in his overs. Praises Tahir for his performance but says that it didn't prove to be enough for them to get over the line. Ends by saying it was tough to lose in front of a packed Newlands crowd and will now change their attention to the ODIs.

Like the Lankans, the Proteas too bowled inconsistently. Ngidi and Paterson started well but then the former had an injury and could not bowl his entire quota of 4 overs while Paterson went for a lot in the death overs. Wayne Parnell was the unluckiest of the bowlers, with three dropped catches coming of his own bowling while Tahir was brilliant again, with 3/18 in 4 overs. Phehlukwayo was poor tonight. Stay tuned for the presentation.

They say, in a T20 game, one moment is enough to change the momentum. South Africa were abysmal in the field tonight. As many as five catches were put down with three going down in succession and if that was not enough, Imran Tahir misjudged an easy chance of Seekkuge Prasanna when he was only on 2. He ended up on an unbeaten 37 from 16 balls and that moment on 16.2 swung the series Sri Lanka's way.

Tharanga and Chandimal departed in quick succession but the 71-run stand in 61 balls for the third wicket between Dickwella and Dhananjaya de Silva gave nervous moments to the Proteas. Then, came those two magical overs - First, Phehlukwayo bowled a wonderful 2-run over in the 15th and then the pressure led to the wickets of the two set batsmen in the next over from Tahir. South Africa were back on top, with the Lankans needing 52 from 24 balls.

We mentioned during the innings break that if Dickwella got going, you never know. He did get going. He got off to a racy start but then struggled in the middle overs. But as long as he was there, the Lankans were in chance of a win.

Phew! What a game. Fully filled of twists and turns till that final over. In the end, Sri Lanka prevailed as the Proteas choked.

19.5 D Paterson to A Gunaratne, That is the game! Comes down the track again, Paterson bowls it on a length outside off, Gunaratne gets to the pitch of the ball and eases it through cover-point for the winning run! This time Gunaratne crosses for the single, uproots the stumps at the bowler's end and then roars in triumph. What a run chase. SRI LANKA WIN BY 5 WICKETS AND TAKE THE SERIES 2-1! 170/5

19.4 D Paterson to A Gunaratne, TOP EDGE, FOUR! That levels the scores! A length ball outside off, Gunaratne comes down the track and swings hard but gets a top edge which sails over the keeper to the third man fence! Drama prevails as Gunaratne uproots the off stump and celebrates but then the square leg umpire tells him that the game is not over yet! Prasanna apologizes on Gunaratne's behalf but Behardien is not too happy. 169/5

A conference is going on out there. As many as 4 players are giving advice to the bowler. Too many cooks spoiling the broth?

19.3 D Paterson to S Prasanna, Full and outside off, Prasanna swings hard and gets a thick inside edge onto his pads. Went too hard there. The ball goes towards point and the batsmen take a run. 5 NEEDED FROM 3 BALLS. 165/5

Behardien has a long chat with his bowler. No field change.

19.2 D Paterson to A Gunaratne, Comes down the track and blasts it over covers for a single. 6 needed from 4 balls now. 164/5

19.1 D Paterson to A Gunaratne, FOUR! Lovely shot! Full and outside off, Gunaratne gets across and paddles it over short fine leg for a boundary! 7 NEEDED FROM 5 BALLS! 163/5

DANE PATERSON to bowl the final over. Sri Lanka need 11 for a win. 10 for a Super Over.

18.6 A Phehlukwayo to S Prasanna, FOUR! Ho ho ho! Cheeky! Prasanna looks to play the paddle scoop by getting across and on seeing that, the bowler bowls it wide outside off. What does the batsman do? Keeps the bat as it is and just angles it to scoop the ball over the right side of the keeper instead! 15 from the over, Phehlukwayo goes for 32 in his 4 overs! 159/5

18.5 A Phehlukwayo to S Prasanna, Another dot! Full and outside off, almost the yorker again, Prasanna swings but misses again! 155/5

18.4 A Phehlukwayo to S Prasanna, Excellent comeback from the bowler. Yorker length, outside off, SP looks to force it through the off side but loses his bat instead which goes near square leg. 155/5

18.4 A Phehlukwayo to S Prasanna, WIDE! That helps. Phehlukwayo bowls this miles outside off and Seekkuge cannot reach. 155/5

18.3 A Phehlukwayo to S Prasanna, SIX! ADMONISHED! How well is that hit? A length ball outside off, Prasanna jumps down the track and swats it miles over long on! No one is catching that for sure! Reaches his best score in T20Is. 16 needed from 9 balls now. The stand is worth 12 from 6 balls. 154/5

18.2 A Phehlukwayo to A Gunaratne, Short and outside off, Gunaratne swings hard and gets a bottom edge towards mid-wicket. A run taken. 148/5

Third man comes up and fine leg goes back for Gunaratne.

ASELA GUNARATNE walks in at number 7, replacing Mendis.

17.3 D Paterson to S Prasanna, OUT! Mendis is well short. Around off, Prasanna looks to push it to the off side but gets an under edge. Mendis goes for the run but as an afterthought. Paterson gets to the ball quickly and has a shy at the striker's end and hits the stumps. The LED bails glow and the umpire refers it upstairs. Replays show that Mendis' dive is not enough to save him. 142/5

Direct hit! Is Kusal Mendis gone? Referred upstairs...

17.2 D Paterson to S Prasanna, FOUR! Fine shot! Prasanna is keeping the Lankans in the game. On middle and off, Prasanna gets across and whips it over square leg for a boundary! 28 needed from 16 balls now! 142/4

DANE PATERSON to bowl the 18th over.

16.6 W Parnell to S Prasanna, SIX! That extra ball hurts Parnell! A length ball on middle, Prasanna is early into his swing, but still the ball goes off the middle of the bat, high in the air and soars over deep square leg! 19 from the over! 33 needed from 18 balls. This game ain't over yet. 137/4

16.6 W Parnell to S Prasanna, WIDE. Banged in short around middle, Seekkuge goes for the hook but misses. He straightaway looks at the square leg umpire in anticipation of a wide and gets it. 131/4

16.5 W Parnell to S Prasanna, SIX! No catching this one! A short ball down the leg side, Prasanna helps it over fine leg and the ball goes all the way! 130/4

16.4 W Parnell to S Prasanna, CATCHING CHANCE MISSED! FOUR! Terrible misjudgement from Tahir. A length ball outside off, Prasanna swings hard but gets a mighty top edge. The ball goes towards third man but Tahir comes charging in from the boundary. Then, he realizes that he has come in too much and stops. Turns back but the ball is already beyond him. Bounces and crosses the ropes. 124/4

16.3 W Parnell to S Prasanna, Outside off, Seekkuge swings but misses. 120/4

16.2 W Parnell to K Mendis, On a good length on middle and off, Mendis is squared up and the ball goes off the outside edge past the keeper to third man. A run taken. 120/4

16.1 W Parnell to S Prasanna, TERRIFIC EFFORT FROM HEINO KUHN! You can put it as a dropped catch if you want but South Africa will look at it as five runs saved. A length ball on middle, Prasanna swings hard and gets a good connection. It seems like the ball will clear the ropes but Kuhn at deep square leg waits for the ball, then leaps and pushes the ball back into play. Just a single! 119/4

WAYNE PARNELL is back on.

15.6 I Tahir to K Mendis, The batsman was beaten and missed the line of the delivery. What a spell from Tahir - 4-0-18-3! 118/4

KUSAL MENDIS is the new man in at number 6, replacing Dhananjaya.

15.5 I Tahir to de Silva, OUT! Stumped! De Silva has been put out of his misery. Beautifully flighted outside off, sees the batsman jump out and slows the pace and bowls it slightly wide outside off. De Silva just through with the shot is comprehensively beaten. So far down the track is he that the keeper Mosehle can wait for a second and then whip the bails off. Getting tougher for the Lankans now. 52 NEEDED FROM 25 BALLS. 118/4

15.4 I Tahir to S Prasanna, Full on middle and leg, flicked through mid-wicket for a single. 118/3

SEEKKUGE PRASANNA walks in at number 5, replacing Dickwella.

15.2 I Tahir to N Dickwella, OUT! Caught! That over from Phehlukwayo has done the trick. Pressure was being built and Dickwella is gone now. Full and around middle, Dickwella looks to slog it over mid-wicket but he has to reach out for it and ends up holing it to Farhaan Behardien at deep mid-wicket. A wonderful innings from Dickwella has been cut short. SRI LANKA still need 54 from 28 balls. 116/3

15.1 I Tahir to N Dickwella, A ridiculous LBW appeal. A googly outside leg, Dickwella looks to sweep but misses. The ball hits his pads and the bowler and keeper appeal, but the impact was well outside leg too! 116/2

IMRAN TAHIR into the attack now. He is bowling out.

14.1 A Phehlukwayo to de Silva, A short ball on middle and off, de Silva looks to pull but gets a thick inside edge onto his body. He is searching for the ball but Dickwella calls him through for a quick single. Phehlukwayo quickly gets to the ball but while trying to pick it up, he runs into de Silva and loses it. He is angry with the batsman for coming in his way but that was not de Silva's mistake. 115/2

ANDILE PHEHLUKWAYO is back on. South Africa need a wicket or two.

13.6 JJ Smuts to N Dickwella, DID THAT CARRY? Not according to Mike Haysman on air. Short and outside off, Dickwella cuts it uppishly and the ball seemingly lands in front of Wayne Parnell at point. 114/2

Phehlukwayo puts in a loud appeal, prolongs it but the umpire is firm. The bowler then has a chat with the batsman, asking him whether he edged it nor not. Then Parnell comes in from somewhere and gives Dickwella a piece of his mind. Snickometer shows nothing. 65/2
