New Zealand opener Tom Latham went on to register his highest score in Test cricket as he helped his side take a massive 296-run lead in the first innings against Sri Lanka.

The 26-year-old brought up his double century in the final session of Day 4, finishing unbeaten on 264, and in the process, carrying his bat – becoming the first Kiwi to do so in New Zealand and second overall.

Latham’s innings of 264 not out is the highest score by a batsman carrying the bat in an innings in Test cricket.

Speaking at the close of play, the 26-year-old said that he believed he was capable of producing such a performance but was pleased to do so on the international stage.

"These innings don't come around too often, so you have to enjoy the moment when they do," he said.

At the close of play on Day 3, Sri Lanka were trailing by 276 runs after being down 20 for 3 in the second innings, thanks to a brace from Tim Southee after Trent Boult picked up the first wicket.
