UAE rout Oman by 71 runs to qualify for Asia Cup T20

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) thrashed Oman by 71 runs to storm into the Asia Cup T20 tournament in Mirpur, Bangladesh, on Monday.

Playing in the last Asia Cup Qualifying match on Monday, UAE scored 172 runs for six wickets in 20 overs and restricted Oman to 101 for eight wickets in their full quota of overs. The UAE won all its three matches and with six points in its kitty it became the only team among four to enter main draws.

The Asia Cup starts from Wednesday with match between India and hosts Bangladesh.

The UAE lost early wicket but Muhammad Kaleem 50 runs (40 balls, 5X4s, 2X6s) and Mohammad Shahzad 34 runs (31 balls, 4X4s) helped the team stage superb recovery with their 86-run partnership for second wicket in just 10.5 overs. Oman got the momentum for some time when they took three wickets in quick succession courtesy their bowler – Aamir Kaleem, who returned figures of 4 for 36 in 4 overs. But as they were tightening their grip on the match, UAE’s Muhammad Usman stole the thunder from them. His fiery innings of 46 runs (22 balls, 6X4s, 2X6s) saw UAE post a huge total against the team who eventually lost two of its three qualifying matches.

Oman had a miserable start as they lost three of their wickets in as many overs. Opener Zeeshan Maqsood, who played a courageous innings of 46 runs (42 balls, 5X4s, 1X6) and was the eighth man to depart, faced UAE bowlers with some distinction. But he didn’t get any significant contribution from other end and apart from Aamir 12 runs (12 balls, 2X4s) and Sufyan Mahmood 13 runs (29 balls, 2X4s), no other Oman batsman reached double figures. For UAE, Mohammad Naveed and Qadeer Ahmed took two wickets each.
