South African pacer Vernon Philander twisted his left knee during a warm-up football game on Thursday and will miss the remainder of the Test series.

Philander was seen hobbling in visible distress, and had to hold on to the shoulders of two members of the support staff. The support staff then had to carry him back all the way to the dressing room.

Skipper AB de Villiers later revealed at the press conference that Philander accidentally stepped on Dean Elgar's foot while practising, and subsequently injured his leg. De Villiers also added that Philander was sent to the hospital to get scans done on the injured foot.

And according to the same medical report: "Philander has multiple ligament injuries on the left ankle and has been advised six weeks of rest."

With Dale Steyn too all but ruled out of the second Test due to a groin strain, Philander's injury will leave South Africa with just two frontline quicks in their attack - Kagiso Rabada and Morne Morkel.

South Africa are trailing the four-match Test series by 1-0, after India secured a thumping 108-run victory at the Mohali Test.
