Wellington: Regular Test and One-Day captain Stephen Fleming was omitted from the New Zealand Team named on Thursday for next month's Twenty20 Championship in South Africa.
Daniel Vettori will lead the team in the absence of Fleming, who is currently playing for Nottinghamshire in the English county cricket championships.
"This is the first opportunity for Daniel to captain the team abroad and we wanted to ensure that Daniel and the team were not looking to (Fleming) for leadership," coach John Bracewell said.
"We also thought it would be a good opportunity for Stephen to remain with Nottinghamshire to build toward the longer forms of the game."
The 15-man New Zealand squad includes new caps Nathan McCullum - brother of regular wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum - and Bradley Scott. Wicketkeeper/batsman Gareth Hopkins, who played five One-Day Internationals for New Zealand in 2004, has also been recalled to the squad.
"We are pleased to have Gareth Hopkins and two new players assemble as part of the squad," Bracewell said.
"Gareth had an excellent (New Zealand) A tour (to Australia last month) and demonstrated good ability with the bat, particularly in the later stages of the game," he said.
"Gareth gets under the ball and hits it a long way. With their complementary skills we are not going to lose anything if both Brendon McCullum and Gareth play in the same match."
Shane Bond, Chris Martin and Mark Gillespie were named as New Zealand's front-line strike bowlers, along with all-rounders Jacob Oram and Scott Styris.
Styris will have to pass a fitness test before being confirmed in the squad.
"Chris Martin has been included in the squad as our second strike bowler in support of Shane Bond," Bracewell said.
"Batting at the end of the order, it is unlikely that his batting will be exposed in Twenty20 cricket," he said.
Team: Daniel Vettori (C), Shane Bond, Peter Fulton, Mark Gillespie, Gareth Hopkins, Chris Martin, Craig McMillan, Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Jacob Oram, Jeetan Patel, Bradley Scott, Scott Styris, Ross Taylor, Lou Vincent.
