Virat Kohli, Ravi Shastri Combo To Start From Where They Left

Cricketnext Staff | Updated: July 19, 2017, 3:02 PM IST

Virat Kohli on relationship with coaches: Everyone has relationships and one goes through them in all spheres of life. I don't want to elaborate further.
Ravi Shastri on the captain-coach relationship: I will answer that in two parts, as a player and as a coach. And trust me there is no conflict of interest. Firstly as a player, when you play the game. you want the mind clear. You don't want any distraction and that happens with a good support staff. Now as a coach, my job is to do just that. I want him to only think about his role and his team. And also the opposition which we always respect.

Ravi Shastri on Bharat Arun's appointment as bowling coach: If Bharat Arun's name was someone else, you would have put it on top. India took 77 of the 80 wickets that fell in the last World Cup. I don't think I need to say anything more after this.

Virat Kohli on added pressure: There is no added pressure. Whatever is happening off the field doesn't bother us. I do not take any added pressure. I started as a player and you only focus on the series that you have to play.

Virat Kohli on team's equation with Shastri: We should already be in-sync because we have worked before for 3 years. Understanding each other should not be a problem having worked together before.

Ravi Shastri on the team's success: I have matured from the last time I went to Sri Lanka. The team has done really well and more than anyone else, they deserve the credit. The credit should go to the team. If they are number 1 today, they deserve the credit. People like Shastri and Anil Kumble will come and go.

Virat Kohli on speculation off the field: I only have the bat in hand. I only focus on doing what is in my hand and that is to play. Speculations are not in my controil. My job is to bring the best out on the field and make this team do well.

Virat Kohli on last tour of Sri Lanka: That tour was a landmark tour for us becuase if you look at the average age, that tour for us was the start and showed that we can win away from home and we do have the culture to win away from home. We showed that we have the ability and we can win from any situation.

The drama did not end with Ravi Shastri’s appointment. Shastri had his way and even though the Cricket Advisory Committee — comprising of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman — had recommended the name of Rahul Dravid as overseas batting consultant and Zaheer Khan as overseas bowling consultant, Shastri put his foot down and on Tuesday Bharat Arun was named the bowling coach. Sanjay Bangar was promoted to assistant coach and R Sridhar was named fielding coach till the 2019 World Cup. Shastri also welcomed both Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan on board as batting and bowling consultants and said that the contracts of the duo will be finalised by the BCCI officials.

Hello and welcome to the LIVE coverage of India's pre-departure press conference ahead of the tour of Sri Lanka. Skipper Virat Kohli and newly appointed head coach Ravi Shastri will be speaking to the media before they leave for the Island Nation. The workings of the Board of Control for Cricket in India could well be compared to the screenplay of an Alfred Hitchcock thriller. Almost every big decision is surrounded by speculations, suspense and most importantly confusion. The same happened last week as after a lot of flip-flops and rumours, finally the name of India's next head coach was announced. Ravi Shastri, who had lost out to Anil Kumble last year, after a fairly successful two years as team director, finally had the last laugh as he was made head coach of the Indian team till the 2019 World Cup. The Sri Lanka tour will be his first Test as India play 3 Tests, 5 ODIs and a T20I.
