Virender Sehwag on Suryakumar Yadav's First-Ball Six: He Was Waiting for His Chance to Prove his Merit

Suryakumar Yadav’s first innings has garnered praise and admiration from different corners of the world. Former and current players of the game cannot stop praising the Mumbai cricketer for going berserk with a fifty in his debut game. The 30-year-old,who got his first chance with the bat on Thursday, showed no signs of nervousness despite being promoted high up the batting order at no. 3. Suryakumar emerged as the wrecker-in-chief for the hosts after coming in the side as a replacement for injured Ishan Kishan. While his fellow teammates struggled to find a boundary, Surya hit a maximum in the first ball he faced that too against the opposition’s best fast-bowler, Jofra Archer.

He amazed the who’s who of the cricket fraternity including former India opener Virender Sehwag, who was impressed with the rookie batsman.

Speaking on Cricbuzz to Gaurav Kapur, Sehwag pointed out that there were three players in that match who opened their respective accounts with a four or six off their first ball. However, he added that Suryakumar was a standout given it was his first game in Indian colours. Sehwag opined that it did not feel like Suryakumar was playing international cricket. He said that because players are generally nervous playing their first game on the international stage. However, Suryakumar managed to overcome the nervousness by hitting a maximum off his first ball.

Rohit Sharma hit a six off his first ball and Shreyas Iyer, who came in at no. 6, smacked a boundary off his first delivery. However, Sehwag said that it seemed that Suryakumar was just waiting for an opportunity to show his mettle. He played like he does in the IPL, said the former cricketer, adding that he said the same thing about pocket dynamite, Ishan Kishan, who went all guns blazing in his debut in the previous T20 fixture.

Talking about Surya’s first ball six, he added, “That is when you feel that ‘Yes I belong here’. There’s also additional confidence after you have smacked England’s fastest bowler.”

Suryakumar’s scintillating knock of 57 off 31 on Thursday was peppered with three sixes and six boundaries at an impressive strike rate of 183.87. He will be soon seen in the upcoming three match ODI series, starting March 23 in Pune.
