When Ravi Shastri Stumped Ashwin & Boys With His Pep Talk

Ravi Shastri has been appointed head coach of the Indian team till the 2019 World Cup. New Delhi: Ravi Shastri has been appointed head coach of the Indian team till the 2019 World Cup. While it is no secret that the players were unanimous in their choice of coach when asked by BCCI CEO Rahul Johri, off-spinner R Ashwin has revealed the most hilarious pep talk Shastri ever game ahead of a game as the Men in Blue came together for the team huddle.

Speaking on Vikram Sathaye’s show ‘What the Duck’, Ashwin said that the most interesting thing that had ever happened in a team huddle was when Shastri was team director and the team was playing T20Is against Australia Down Under, ahead of the 2016 World T20 in India.

“Arun announced the team and he put it across to MS (Dhoni) and MS was like nothing, let’s play the game. And, then Ravi Bhai said, ‘Guys! Go and Smash them!’ We all thought he was going to say something because he was fuming for so long but he said go and smash them, turned around and left. People were still in the huddle, not knowing what had happened. That was the most hilarious things that happened,” Ashwin laughed.

Interestingly, when asked on Wednesday on the reason why he was such a favourite with the Indian players, Shastri was at his best and said: “I must have done something right.”

In fact, Ashwin revealed that while Dhoni was the captain, there was hardly much said in team huddles as he would say all good and gear up for action. But this was the most hilarious thing Ashwin had ever heard as he expected Shastri to build it up by talking about how the Aussies were 2-0 down and it was important to take advantage and go for the kill.

“It’s usually not long with. With MS around, it’s nothing. Every coach offers MS to say a few words and MS very firmly says ‘all good’ and we start the game,” Ashwin said.
