World Cup: Pakistan ensure a spot for West Indies in quarters

A win against UAE was not good enough for the Caribbean side to book their spot in the quarter-finals of the World Cup as they had to wait for the match between Pakistan and Ireland to finish.

The first job was done as West Indies got the better of UAE and later were rooting for Pakistan to win which would have ensured the West Indians a spot in the last eight based on the calculations of net run rate (NRR).

And when Pakistan overpowered the Irish team thanks to maiden ODI ton by wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed, West Indies must have heaved a sigh of relief in their hotel rooms.

West Indies finished the group with six points and an NRR of -0.053, far better than Ireland who finished the group with equal points but an inferior NRR of -1.014.

Earlier, West Indies won the match against UAE by six wickets and Pakistan's thumping victory against Ireland by seven wickets confirmed the Caribbean team's fourth spot in Pool B.

That effectively means West Indies will play Pool A toppers New Zealand in the quarter-final on March 21, while Pakistan face Australia on March 20.

Ireland would consider themselves unlucky as even a tie or a washout would have given them their first ever quarter-final appearance in a World Cup.
