Australia inch towards a big win against England as the hosts were 203/6 at stumps on Day 3, trailing by 129 runs.
Cook was battling it out all alone as wickets were falling from one end.
Australia didn't waste any time in picking wickets as Lyth was out for another poor score. Bell, Root couldn't do much as well as they failed under pressure.
Steven Smith dismissed Cook (85) at the stroke of stumps to keep Australia on top.
It was another superb day for Australia at the Oval. First they dismissed England for a cheap score and then enforced the follow-on. England still trail by 129 runs and have just four wickets in hand.
Lyon struck twice in an over to send Bairstow and Stokes back to the dressing room.
