Don't compromise on pace: Srinath

New Delhi: The spate of injuries to India's faster bowlers have left the cricket fraternity with quite a few creases on their forehead.

But if former pace bowler Javagal Srinath is to be believed, the road to success lies in the speed itself, not cutting down on it.

And the MRF Pace Foundation in collaboration with Gatorade has taken the initiative to find India's new pace hope.

"It is not to reduce the speed and play for a longer time. I think he should be able to bowl more than 135kmph," says the chief coach at MRF and former India pacer TA Sekhar when asked what they were looking for in the next pace hope.

The nation is in need of a genuine express bowler and while the initiative looks to address that, the current crop of Indian pacer is losing their pace

"You cannot compromise too much on pace. You've got to be bowling fast and at the same time line and length should be mandatory. Some balance has to be there as you cannot compromise too much on your pace to get the right line and length. You are negating your strength in that sense," Javagal Srinath says

Besides speed, fitness concerns are a big worry too as some fast bowlers have been breaking down with alarming regularity.

"I want our players to play more county cricket during their off seasons when they don't have too much practice and then come to play international cricket," Srinath says when asked what the players should do to remain fit.

Fast bowlers hunt in pairs and it comes as no surprise that Srinath is happy the Indian team now has his partner-in-speed Venkatesh Prasad to look after the bowling department.

"I think that is the best move that has happened since the end of World Cup. He has to be given two-three years to establish himself with the boys. A lot of work has to be done and six months is too short a time for that thing," says about Prasad's appointment as India's bowling coach.

But wouldn't we also want a really fast, express-pacer too?

"How many matches Shoaib Akhtar is playing? How many matches has Brett Lee been playing continuously?" Sekhar asks to counter that an express bowler can cure the ills of Indian team.
