After Sunrisers Hyderabad registered their first IPL win of the season with a five-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals, all-rounder Vijay Shankar said that the whole team was waiting for the win after facing disappointment earlier.
“It is very important to start the tournament well, and this win was something that the team was waiting for. We played really well to win this game,” Shankar said.
Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 102 put the Royals in a strong position with a total of 198 in the first innings, but it was chased down with ease by the Sunrisers, with five wickets and one over to spare.
“I think the 100 the Sanju Samson got was outstanding. He had to play really well to get a 100, we definitely have to give it to him,” Shankar continued.
“Last year, SRH was one of the best bowling sides in the IPL. These things (going for those many runs) happen, what matters is how we come back and play the next game.”
Shankar himself made a quick-fire 35 off 15 balls, and lamented the fact that he could not be the one to take his team over the line in the end.
“I’m very disappointed by how I got out today. I had been waiting for an opportunity where I had the chance to win the match for my team, and remain not out. I could have won the game on my own.
“But the good thing I can take from the game is the way I was thinking overall. When I got out, all I wanted to do was hit the ball over the bowler’s head for a two or a four. I think I got too close to the ball and that’s when everything changed for me.
“I look to adapt myself to the match situation. In such a high intensity tournament, it is very important. And I just try to do my best in every match I play,” Shankar said.
