IPL spot-fixing: Mudgal report gives clean chit to Srinivasan, but raises question on his conduct

New Delhi: The rot in Indian cricket runs deep and it isn't limited to a few cricketers and a few Indian Premier League team owners who loved placing bets, according to findings of the Mukul Mudgal Committee's report which were made public on Monday.

International Cricket Council Chairman N Srinivasan is in the dock for not taking necessary actions even while being aware of murky dealings in the game. The Mudgal panel found no evidence of Srinivasan being involved in the sleaze of spot-fixing and betting but raised a larger and more damaging question. It has found that Srinivasan was aware of individuals being involved in betting but chose to look the other way and it has raised questions on his conduct.

Petitioner Aditya Verma of the Bihar Cricket Association said, "It has been proved that N Srinivasan was aware of corruption and betting, but did not do anything about it."

The charade that Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was nothing more than an enthusiast has been demolished. The probe has found that Meiyappan was Chennia Super Kings' team official and was involved in betting on games.

Co-owner of Rajasthan Royals, Raj Kundra, has been found to have been betting as well. This makes the future of both the franchises uncertain.

Srinivasan has refused to comment on the revelations. He said, "I don't want to make any comment as matter is sub-judice. I would not like to comment before November 24. My lawyers are studying this."

Former cricketer Kirti Azad said, "My stand is vindicated. I have been saying it for a very long time that a lot of betting and spot-fixing is going on. The players have been penalised and not team officials, but I am happy with what has come out."

But perhaps the most damaging indictment is that of the IPL's top official Sunder Raman. IPL Chief Operating Officer Sunder Raman, whose influence has expanded from the IPL to BCCI and ICC affairs, has been found to have been in touch with a bookie as well -- eight times in one season to be precise.

Former IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla said, "Whatever the report says about Gurunath Meiyappan and Sundar Raman, we will wait for the Supreme Court's observations on November 24."

Actor Vindoo Dara Singh was also accused of betting in IPL. He also took the opportunity to reveal that former Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh told him and Gurunath that the case was on only to target Srinivasan.

Vindoo said, "The then Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh called me to his cabin and said he will fix us. He will not bow down to political pressure. This investigation was done to target a few. All this was being done to ensure that N Srinivasan is out. There is complete malaise in this investigation."

The emergent working committee meeting of the BCCI now promises to be a stormy affair, and questions on Srinivasan's tenability as a board member will surely be raised. And with more revelations expected in the coming weeks, Indian cricket is surely bracing up for a gathering storm that could have ramifications of catastrophic nature.
