Sharad Pawar set to return as MCA boss, Munde seeks stay on elections

| October 17, 2013, 1:00 PM IST

Mumbai: With Gopinath Munde's nomination for the post of Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president rejected and even his appeal against that rejection dismissed, former BCCI and ICC president Sharad Pawar is set to return to the top MCA post unopposed. However, Munde plans to move court to seek a stay on the elections.

Munde's nomination was rejected on Thursday after he failed to prove himself as a Mumbai resident. Munde, however, says he had submitted his passport, his income-tax receipts and his Permanent Account Number (PAN) despite which his nomination was rejected.

The BJP politician also reckons that MCA's rejection of his nomination is illegal. He contends that Pawar himself is not a permanent resident of Mumbai and changed his address only two months ago. Munde, sources told CNN-IBN, will approach city Civil Court seeking a stay on the MCA elections.

But if Pawar does manage to return, the anti-N Srinivasan lobby in the BCCI is set to get a shot in the arm as it's a well-established fact that Pawar and Srinivasan are not on the same page. So a lot of fireworks can be expected in the coming days as Pawar will attend BCCI meetings if he is elected as the MCA president.

Pawar's return as MCA president is exactly what Srinivasan has feared for a long time. In fact, MCA standing president Ravi Sawant, who was the interim treasurer of the BCCI, was given the go-ahead by Srinivasan to postpone the MCA elections earlier so as to prevent Pawar from returning to MCA in time before the board's Annual General Meeting (AGM).
