Spot-fixing: Players, bookies sent to police custody

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Tuesday remanded three players accused of spot-fixing in IPL to five-day police custody. Apart from the former Rajasthan Players Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, seven bookies were also sent to the police custody for the same time period.

Sreesanth, Chandila and Chavan were arrested on May 16 on charges that they spot-fixed certain matches in IPL 6. All three players, along with several bookies and fixers, have been arrested in the case and their interrogations are on.

The police made recoveries from Sreesanth's friend's house in Jaipur, sources said. Sreesanth, who has been accused of spot-fixing at least three matches of Indian Premier League's sixth edition, took the police team to Jaipur and led them to the recoveries, they added.

Police recovered clothes worth Rs 1.95, bought from a Diesel showroom in Mumbai, from his friend's house, according to the sources. They also recovered the pacer's BlackBerry Z10 phone, bought from the spot-fixing money, sources said.

Sources added that the police are now sorting through Sreesanth's bills. The cricketer paid for all these purchases with cash, sources said.

Meanwhile, actor Vindoo Dara Singh was arrested on Tuesday by the Mumbai Police for links with IPL betting mafia. The actor, who was detained by the Crime branch in Mumbai on Monday night was formally arrested on Tuesday morning. According to sources, arrested bookie Ramesh Vyas named the actor while he was being interrogated in the IPL spot-fixing case.

Police also arrested hawala operator Alpesh Patel along with actor Vindoo Dara Singh in connection with betting mafia in the ongoing IPL. Sources said that Patel was in touch with all the bookies who have so far figured in the case.

Mumbai Police sources said that the arrested bookie can help them establish the money trail. Over a crore rupees was recovered from Patel when he was arrested. Patel was reportedly the conduit in money transfers between India and Dubai.
