With a cool head, Virat Kohli can be cricket's next big thing: Kapil Dev

If you have to pick one Indian cricketer who has made the most noise - good and bad - over the past half a dozen years, it has to be Virat Kohli; and on Wednesday, he got a 'conditions-applied' nod from arguably the best player India has ever produced, Kapil Dev.

In a freewheeling interview with CNN-IBN, Kapil was quick to point at Virat as the most exciting thing to have happened to Indian cricket in the past decade. However, India's best allrounder did add a rider to his statement thanks to the Indian Test captain's infamous off-field antics.

"I think Virat Kohli is a very, very exciting cricketer," Kapil said. "He has the ability and talent as long as he keeps his head in the right place. I think he can break anybody's record."

Kohli's form has been central to the transition period India went through after the exit of stalwarts like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Anil Kumble.

The Delhi batsman's prolific bat ensured India were served the runs with incessant regularity, both home and away. His record while chasing totals in ODIs and the form he showed in the Test series in Australia testify for that.

However, his career has a fair sprinkling of controversies. Whether it's the finger salute towards the crowd in Australia, the tiff with a journalist at the World Cup or the mid-match IPL date with girlfriend Anushka Sharma, Kohli has always managed to stay in the news for the good as well as wrong reasons.

And Kapil stressed on the need for Kohli to choose the right path and channel his aggression, especially now when the team will look up to him as captain.

"He has the ability. But sometimes, when you are very aggressive, you forget the right road, which is the best road for you. But I think he is a cricketer to watch. What ability and talent he has!" Kapil said.
