When you hear Skoda then chances are that one of the first cars that will come to your mind is the Octavia. That’s for good reason as it is one of their most popular products globally. Now, for 2017, they have given it a facelift.
We tell you whether it’s worth your money.
So let’s get to the changes right away. The biggest one is the new front-end design.
It gets Skoda’s signature Butterfly grille with a blacked out treatment, which, now gets four-set headlights around it which are all LEDs, and so are the daytime running lights. The level of detailing in the headlamps, though, is commendable.

The hood is also more sculpted than before and the car is now wider and longer as well. All of this gives the Octavia an aggressive yet elegant look.

The side profile of the car gets new 16-inch alloy wheels and at the back, it gets new c-shaped led tail lights.
The interiors have been updated as well.
There’s a new touchscreen infotainment system on board that has grown from 6.5 inches in the last model to 8-inches in this one. It offers the usual connectivity features like AUX, USB and Bluetooth connectivity. Also, the new centre console pretty much does away with a host of physical buttons and is now touch-responsive which makes the cabin look cleaner and feel even more premium.
There’s also ambient lighting inside the cabin and the large electrically operated panoramic sunroof which makes things even better.

The build and the quality of materials used is fantastic and there’s soft touch plastic all around the dash. There’s enough room for those seated at the back as well and now, they also get two USB ports along with the rear AC vents for their convenience. But if you are one of those who prefer driving over sitting at the back then Skoda has it covered as well.
When it comes to the driving experience then Skoda pretty much hits the nail on its head. The driver-side seat is 12-way electrically adjustable with memory function and the steering wheel is reach and height adjustable as well. This allows the driver to customise the seating position to their taste and find that sweet spot for long drives.

As for practicality, there are several compartment spaces and the Octavia has a cooled and illuminated glovebox too. The boot space is a generous 590-litre which is in line with what you get in cars in this segment but the fact that it opens along with the rear glass panel makes it more practical than anything else. This is because of the coupe-like shape of the car.
But the heart of the car is where the magic is. The Octavia comes with a choice of two petrol engine options which is a 1.4-litre unit or a more powerful 1.8-litre mill. But, the variant that caught our fancy was the 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that delivers 143 PS of power and 320 Nm of torque.
The Octavia packs in a fun and engaging driving experience. One of the biggest reasons for that is the transmission, which on our test unit was a 6-speed DSG unit. The response and gear shifts are quick and when you want a bit more of an engaging drive experience then you can put the car in sports mode and taking control of the gearbox by shifting through the steering mounted paddle shifters manually. Once you do that, you will realise just how good the Skoda feels to drive.
So yes, the Octavia goes fast. But it’s also effective when it comes to stopping as the brakes offer good feedback and bite. There’s enough to keep you safe as well as it gets 8 airbags inside the cabin, ABS, EBD, Hill hold assist and electronic stability control.
The biggest attraction in terms of features is the hands-free parking.

All you have to do is engage the park assist and find the car a good parking spot. Then, the car takes care of the steering wheel and all you have to do is moderate the accelerator and the brake. The car will park itself. This feature works for both parallel and perpendicular parking. Keep in mind that the Skoda Octavia is your most accessible way of experiencing this feature as it is only available in the likes of the Audi Q7 and Volvo S90.

So at the end of the day, the Skoda Octavia was always a good car. Now, with the new list of features and looks that it sports, the car promises to be better value for money than ever. The only question remains is how does Skoda prices the Octavia at upon its launch in July. Because if they get it right, they have a winner on their hands.
