Datsun redi-GO 1.0-Litre AMT Long Term Review: First Report

The Datsun redi-GO is one of the most accessible entry-level hatchbacks in the country, and it is also the most accessible way for you to get your hands on an AMT-equipped car. But does that mean there are areas where Datsun has cut corners to achieve this price or is it the perfect car for your money? We find out in our long-term review.

When it comes to buying cars, nothing beats the value for money that an entry-level hatchback can offer. And over time, they have only got better by leaps and bounds as they offer more features at a lesser price. Ah, price – one of the biggest factors for people buying a car in this segment. For many, an entry-level hatchback is seen as an alternative to a two-wheeler and if we were, to sum up, the cars that offer this alternative at an accessible price, then it comes down to majorly three cars – the Maruti Suzuki Alto, the Renault Kwid and the Datsun redi-GO. But here’s the thing, in this day and age of flexible EMI options, people are willing to take the leap in exchange for features that could make their lives a bit easier. And as a result, AMT-equipped cars are seeing an unprecedented rise in popularity – and, all these three cars offer that albeit alongside a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine.

But it is the Datsun redi-GO that beats everyone else when it comes to having an accessible price tag, that too by a sizeable margin. And that is applicable for almost all the comparative variants in its segment.

So what all of this means is that the Datsun redi-GO AMT is effectively the most affordable AMT-equipped car in India! Except for the Tata Nano, of course, but no one is buying that car (literally, they sold 3 units in June 2018 and produced just one).

Hence, if you want to have a car with the ease of having an AMT transmission, then the Datsun redi-GO makes perfect sense. Or does it? Because it is this aggressive price tag that makes one wonder whether Datsun has cut any corners to achieve this title. Just what do you get for Rs 4.07 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi)?

Well, the Datsun redi-GO has joined our long-term fleet and over the course of the next few months, I will be spending all my time with this car by using it the way it will be used by its owner’s – as a daily runabout car. It will be put through choc-o-block city traffic, the patchy pothole-ridden surfaces, highway rides and weekend getaways too.

Watch this space for updates as the Datsun redi-GO is put through the ultimate test. Also, if you have any questions regarding the car and any driving scenario that you would want us to experience with this car, feel free to reach out to us on our Twitter handle @News18Auto.
