Indians love their SUVs and how? While the SUV market is flooded with offering from almost all manufacturers, there’s a void for lifestyle pick-up trucks in India, a prominent segment elsewhere, especially in the South-East Asia. Isuzu aims to fill this void with the D-Max V-Cross lifestyle truck. They have even created a segment specially for the V-Cross – the one they call the Adventure Utility Vehicle.

We recently took a ride in the SUV to find out is worth its personality? Our take on the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross here!

Looks

The Isuzu D-Max V-Cross has an intimidating personality and comes with a massive road-presence, making it a one-off vehicle in India. Ample amount of chrome has been used from the big grille upfront to the door handles and side view mirrors. The massive wheel arches and a big loading bay at the rear, makes it a looker.

The flat loading bay is completely flat and can be used to load a whole lot of stuff from luggage to moving your house to even camping during weekend drives. The cabin of the D-Max V-Cross is neatly laid out and has a lot of space for 5 adults to fit-in properly. The seats are comfortable and big, which makes the driving an easy affair.

We really liked the rotary automatic climate control system, that is nicely integrated in the centre console. But that’s all about the cabin, as it doesn’t offer anything else in terms of gadgets, not even an infotainment system or rear AC vents. The fit and finish is a bit of an issue with the D-Max and even the heavy doors need a lot of force to close properly.

Engine

The Isuzu D-Max V-Cross is powered by a 2.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine with an output of 134 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. The gearbox is 5-speed manual unit. We do miss the automatic gearbox in D-Max that can do wonders in this massive truck. Such is the level of engineering in the D-Max, that we could hardly hear any diesel clutter inside the cabin, though it’s pretty loud outside.

For a vehicle this high, the body-roll is surprisingly low. We drove the vehicle at high speeds around curves and Isuzu managed to impress us. Reason being, the Centre of gravity is managed quite well and wheel track is widen a bit, giving it the much needed stability across the corners. The high set seats and large glass area give you a commanding view of the road ahead.

The gearshift is a bit clunky and thanks to the high-gear ratio, you don’t feel like changing gears too often, even in the city commute. The ride quality is rather bouncy, but then, you can take the V-Cross to any sort of terrain and road surface you want, without thinking twice. The mileage can be a bit of an issue for someone who is looking at a frugal car. We managed to get an average of 9+ kmpl.

Technology

The Isuzu D-Max V-Cross comes with a shift-on-the-fly 4WD system and can be changed with a rotary knob on the go. It makes the D-Max one of the most affordable SUVs with the 4WD system in India along with the Renault Duster.

For city commute, you can slot the knob in the 2H mode. For bad roads like dirt or slippery road – slot it into 4H up to a speed as high as 100 kmph. And for proper off-roading like snow, mud, use the 4L for max torque.

Leaving every pleasure aside, the biggest problem you will face in the D-Max is the heavy hydraulic steering, which is cumbersome to operate. After driving the car in the city traffic, you feel like returning from a Gym after doing an upper body workout. It’s very hard to turn the car from a standstill, or park it in tight spaces.

On the safety front, apart from the Airbags and ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, the D-Max also adheres to the pedestrian safety norms and has an impact absorbing chassis.

Verdict

Priced at just Rs 12.49 lakhs, the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross offers a Spacious 5-seater cabin combined with a huge loading bay. It also has this massive road-presence. Add an AWD to the mix, and the D-Max becomes a proper SUV too. But, driving the V-Cross is like riding on an elephant. It’s bouncy, unpredictable and needs a lot of space to park.
