New Delhi: Around 32 lakh debit card holders in India have been affected by one of the largest ever breaches of financial data in the country, Economic Times reported today.

Customers of the State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, YES Bank and Axis Bank are among those affected and the banks will either replace their cards or ask them to change their security codes.

The fraudsters were able to steal information by way of malware introduced to Hitachi Payment Services, which provides ATM and point of sale services. Mastercard and Visa debit cards constitute around 26 lakh cards while 6 lakh cards are RuPay cards, Economic Times said, quoting unnamed sources.

YES Bank, in a statement, said that "there is no evidence of a breach or compromise on YES Bank ATMs".

The bank also said that its ATM network and payment services are completely safe to use.

Banks had been receiving complaints from customers about misuse of their cards, including purported use in ATMs in China. The banks in turn alerted Visa and Mastercard. A forensic audit is being conducted by payment security specialists SISA.

SBI’s Chief Information Officer, Mrutyunjau Mahapatra, was quoted by ET saying that the bank had blocked 6 lakh debit cards as a precautionary measure. Mahapatra said that the SBI network of ATMs had not been breached. A spokesperson for HDFC bank was also quoted as advising their customers to use only HDFC ATMs.
