New Delhi: Citizens want the government to cut excise duty on petrol and diesel to be cut by at least 20%. According to a survey conducted by LocalCircles, which received over 15,000 votes, 41% of respondents said that the government should cut the excise duty by 30% and 26% said it should be cut by 20%.

As of Monday, the price of petrol was Rs 78.27 per litre and diesel was Rs 69.17 per litre. Cities like Mumbai paid a staggering Rs 86.08 per litre of petrol.

In the survey, 22% said that the excise duty should be made a flat Rs 5 on both petrol and diesel an 11% of the respondents didn’t have a view on the price rise.

Many citizens on LocalCircles had suggested that once petroleum products are brought under GST, the states could be allowed to add a cess to it to cover up some of their revenue losses and the centre could reimburse them yearly to balance their ledgers.

The platform conducted a second poll asking the citizens what was the best way to reduce VAT on petrol and diesel. Forty two percent said they should levy an absolute value of tax instead of percentage of base price, while 36% said that states should reduce the VAT rate itself. There were about 16% respondents who said that the states should do nothing and let higher fuel prices reduce consumption and pollution. A small 6% were unsure about what should be done.
