New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India may release a new Rs 200 note soon, according to reports. However, a official statement about a new currency note is yet to be made.

A government official told ANI that a printing order has been placed.

The decision to introduce Rs. 200 notes was taken by the RBI with the consultation of Finance Ministry in March, reports said. A may be issued by the Reserve Bank of India regarding a new note.

This comes on the day the Supreme Court has pulled up the central government for announcing December 30, 2016, as the deadline for depositing demonetised notes. The apex court has given the government and the Reserve Bank of India two weeks time to reply to its concern.

Stating that the government could not take away someone's money 'for no fault of his/her', the apex court said, "You can't be allowed to deprive a person of his money if he couldn't deposit it due to genuine problems. There will be a serious problem if you don't look into it. Give a window to a genuine problem. What if someone is terminally ill and couldn't deposit the money? Don't force us to pass a three-line order and quash your December 30 notification."

The new Rs 200 denomination notes may improve the currency situation in the country.

After the announcement of demonetisation in November last year, the RBI had introduced new notes of Rs. 500 and 2,000.
