Many people want to get at least one tattoo over the course of their lifetime. It could be a name, a symbol, or anything that makes them happy — from religion to literature. But most people settle for a few ink-spots on their body. However, Wolfgang Kirsch, 72, wasnot satisfied with ten or even twenty markings on his body. The German man has made the record for being the country’s most tattooed person, with nearly 98% of his body inked.
Apart from the 86 tattoos, he also has 17 implants under his skin. He has tattoos on his arms, face, torso, legs, even eyes and lips—everywhere, except for the soles of his feet.
As some of his implants are magnetic, and he is constantly attracting small metal objects like paper clips to his skin, he has nicknamed himself Magneto. The reason why he started the tattoo journey is actually quite revolutionary.
“In GDR (the German Democratic Republic or East Germany), tattoos were frowned upon and unthinkable for post office employees. It wasn’t until I was 46 years old that I got my first tattoo, a tear under my eye,” he was quoted by Lad Bible. Kirsch, or Magneto, used to be a post-worker in his early years but he always had a desire to stand apart from the crowd. It has taken him more than twenty years to achieve his current status and he doesn’t have a single regret.
He has gone through 240 tattoo sessions in his life, cumulative of which is about 720 hours (which is roughly a month), on the chair and under the needle. He’s spent around $30,000 (INR 21,84,861) on all his tattoos. Due to his well-known repute, he is often contacted to do modelling or photoshoots.
“Even on the street, people ask me for autographs and want to take photos with me,” he said. Apart from being Germany’s most tattooed man, he is also the man with most tattoos over the age of 70.
