A couple from a village in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district has set a goal for all of us.

At their wedding, they did away with all the unnecessary pomp and asked the guests to bring educational books as gifts.

Amar Kamalkar, an 'Art of Living' faculty, who has been a social worker for almost 15 years now and runs his own foundation 'Yuva Chetna', always wanted to set up a public library with educational books. So, Kamalkar decided to use his wedding as an opportunity get this dream kick-started. And, it worked!

When he asked for gifts at his wedding, he had one rule: the guests were requested to only bring books for competitive exams.

"Competitive exams are hard. But finding the right books for these exams is even harder," Kamalkar told

"A lot of people in rural Maharasthra neither have the means to afford the books, nor the resources to locate them otherwise," he said. Kamalkar wanted to change that.

Kamalkar's bride Rani, a professor for Economics at a university in Pune, believes in the same principles as him – and agreed to this request.

Their family and close friends however, were initially a little reluctant to agree to their strange request. "Not everyone completely understood why our social work had to be interlinked with our wedding," Kamalkar said.

On the D-day, the couple was overwhelmed when over 300 guests turned up at their wedding with a book in their hand.

“We didn’t send out printed wedding invites, just forwarded our invitation message to our friends on Whatsapp. Somehow that got circulated, and people we didn’t know also came forward with books. They found our request unique, but substantial and wanted to contribute,” Kamalkar said.

At the end of the wedding, they had received almost 3000 books.

The couple is now trying to set up a library in Ahmednagar for the students in their village who are preparing for their competitive examination.

The couple, too, took out a substantial amount of their own saving meant for wedding expense and invested in the library.

Kamalkar said his drive comes from him not having access to these books in the past. "There are always people who would want these books, but have no way of attaining it," he said.

The couple will not only provide these books to members of the library but they also plan to guide prospective candidates on to how to go about competitive exams.

The library is expected to be operational by the end of June, and Kamalkar has already started receiving calls from potential students who are interested in getting books from the library.

But their dreams don't end end here. The couple now intends to open another library in Pune to mark their one-year anniversary.
