For the past few weeks, NFTs or non-fungible tokens have been a hot topic on various social media platforms. Taking advantage of the trend, an artist by the name @yungjake on Twitter has created a very interesting piece of art for sale as NFT. The art piece is a portrait of popular singer Billie Eilish, made entirely of emojis! In the portrait, Billie’s face, hair, eyes, neck—all of it—is entirely made of emoji composites. The portrait is up for auction at the moment that will end tonight. As of now, the highest bid is at 5.00 ETH (Ethereum cryptocurrency, of which NFT is a part) or $9,018.95 (INR 6,53,042). Yung Jake is extremely popular on social media, with profiles featured in prestigious papers and magazines about his internet rise to fame. The artist hailing from Los Angeles, and known as James Patterson in real life, has been making these emoji portraits for a long time. His 3-Dimesional Emoji portraits have been displayed in Tripoli Gallery in Southampton, New York as well.
According to the New York Times, Jake started these digital paintings in 2015. His highly detailed and realistic art is completely made of full or broken or duplicated emojis to create the right curves, depths, and facial features.
The emojis are not face/human forms. He uses a variety of symbols, shapes, objects, animals—basically everything available in your phone’s emoji keypad.
However, this is probably his first artwork that is being sold as NFT. For the uninitiated, NFT can be best explained as a unique token which cannot be replaced with something else. For reference, Bitcoin is fungible i.e. it can be exchanged/replaced/traded for another bitcoin. However, NFTs are all one of a kind. If you replaced it with another, you would have something completely different. Any digital thing created can be an NFT; music, artwork— NFT marketplace OpenSea oversees the digital token exchange and keeps records.
