A Chinese woman was left shocked when she found out that she was born a male and is intersex. The 25-year-old woman from eastern China shared that she had been trying to get pregnant for the past one year but failed. As per SCMP, the woman found out that she is an intersex after undergoing X-ray of her injured ankle, which revealed that her bones hadn’t developed since adolescence.
Further probe revealed that the woman had never got her periods. She never menstruated in her life, a fact she never admitted to the public to anyone out of embarrassment. Talking to a local doctor, the woman shared her mother had taken her to a medic when she young, who said that she was developing slower than others sexually and she would have her periods in a few years.
First Affiliated Hospital of College of Medicine, Zhejiang University, the woman in a statement posted on WeChat this week stated that she didn’t suspect she wasn’t a biological woman, despite not menstruating because she has external female genitalia.
During an endocrinologist visit, test results revealed she has high blood pressure and low blood potassium, symptoms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia, a disease which could lead to a sexual development disorder. Doctors state it could be the result of her parents being closely related.
According to a genetic test, her karyotype was 46 XY, found in males who have genitalia neither of male nor female, said Doctor Dong Fengqin, an endocrinologist. Dong states they didn’t find hidden testes in her body, which might be because of her old age and it has degenerated and atrophied.
The woman also found out she doesn’t have a uterus or ovaries, while also lacking male genitalia or Adam’s apple.
The case has opened up a much-needed conversation, highlighting the problem of China’s sexual illiteracy and lack of sexual education in schools, experts suggest.
The hospital said that she is yet to choose what gender she wants to identify with. Deputy director of the hospital’s Mental Health Centre, Hu Shaohua said that rebuilding a gender identity is the most important thing now for the woman.
