Christmas Spirit: Chefs Cook Special Meal For Migrants Waiting to Enter the US
Thousands of Central American migrants spent weeks traveling north through Mexico in caravans only to be halted at the U.S. border where many hope to apply for asylum.

A group of chefs from San Diego prepared a giant batch of the traditional Spanish dish paella for hundreds of mostly Central American migrants waiting to enter the United States in Tijuana, Mexico on Sunday (December 23).

Armando Rodiel is a Spanish chef who migrated to the United States years ago and organized this event, which he calls Paella Without Borders, to provide a gourmet meal to migrants waiting across the border in Mexico for a chance to apply for asylum in the United States.

"We're here to make our voice heard, and what better way to do it than with paella, which symbolizes liberty, fellowship, unity, and fraternity, and above all, happiness," said Rodiel.

Hundreds of migrants waited in line to get a taste of the traditional Spanish dish made of rice, vegetables, seafood and meat.

"We're here waiting to try out the famous paella. And we're grateful, too, for the people that are coming here to support us," said Honduran migrant Nelson Quintanilla.

U.S. President Donald Trump has sought to make it harder to get asylum, but the U.S. Supreme Court recently upheld a federal court decision last month that ruled against his policy that only permitted asylum claims made at official ports of entry.
