New Delhi: The Congress was left red-faced on Sunday when its social media team goofed up while marking stalwart PV Narasimha Rao's death anniversary. Instead of remembering the late PM on his death anniversary, the party’s Twitter handle ended up marking his birth anniversary.

The statesman was born June 28, 1921 and passed away on December 23, 2004. However, the Congress’ social media handle mixed up the two dates, leading to the faux-pas.

“P.V. Narasimha Rao, the 9th PM of India, dismantled the License Raj and oversaw the biggest economic reform the country has seen till date. His contributions to the nation shall always be remembered as we honour him today on his birth anniversary,” the erroneous tweet said.

Realising the error, the party deleted the offending tweet and replaced it with the correct one. "P.V. Narasimha Rao, the 9th PM of India, dismantled the License Raj and oversaw the biggest economic reform the country has seen till date. His contributions to the nation shall always be remembered."

During his term as Prime Minister from 1991-96, Rao, together with Manmohan Singh, orchestrated the national economic reforms which came to be known as the liberalisation of the Indian economy, and opened India to the world markets.
