The first episode of Game of Thrones Season 7 is finally here and it marks the beginning of the end we've all been waiting for. Titled Dragonstone, the first episode of the penultimate season sees almost all the main characters proceeding from where they left in Season 6 and also gives a faint idea of what more is coming this season.

The episode begins with Jon Snow, King of the North, having a conversation about the looming 'Winter War' approaching from beyond The Wall, with his northern allies. While the northern men are more than keen to fight the White Walkers, they take offence when Jon mentions gender equality on the war field. Shutting them up again is the young and fierce Lyanna Mormont whose sass we all admired in the previous season. The Lady of Bear Island puts her foot down saying, "I can fight and I don't need orders from anybody for that."

The Winterfell meeting also witnessed the initial tension between Jon and Sansa (which is expected to rise further) as the Lady of Winterfell disagreed with Jon's decision of including all the Houses of the North, even the ones who fought for the Bolton's. In a hasty move, the King demanded loyalty from the Karstarks and the Umbers, much to Sansa's dismay and Littlefingers' delight. While no doubt the sister has full faith in her brother (for now), she is also the biggest critic of his work, something which might hurt Jon's ego in the future.

Down South, new Queen of the seven kingdoms, counts her enemies and is not surprised to discover that only three still remain loyal to the Iron Throne. While Jamie and Cersei have the much-needed talk about the future of House Lannister, one can predict the near-future where the queen might turn sinister in order to protect her House and herself. She even invites Euron Greyjoy, Lord of Iron Island, to lure him into her politics. And because all that Euron desires is a powerful Queen, it looks like an unusual matrimony is on cards this season - in exchange of his ruthlessness and of course his Iron fleets.

Sandor Clegane, who is currently riding with the band of Lord of the Light followers, experiences an unusual scene and the fans get to see the softer side of The Hound. Also, from the looks of the fire, it seems The Hound has finally seen something projecting to the great Winter Wall and the one who is going to stop it (mysteries... and more mysteries.)

Having graduated from her gruelling internship with the Faceless Men, Arya is now unstoppable in her quest to avenge her family. And as she later reveals to a singing soldier – a slightly comedic cameo by the musical guest star, Ed Sheeran – she’s heading not North to Winterfell, but South to King’s Landing, to ‘kill the Queen’. Because for not so little Arya, revenge comes before family.

On another Stark note, Bran enters the Wall and is received by new Lord COMMANDER of the Watch once he narrates them the horror they experienced at Hardhome.

Samwell Tarly, who is living a not so wonderful life in Oldtown trying to find more about dragon glass and white walkers, discovers two influencing things in his time there: Dragon stone has a mountain of dragon glass stored beneath their kingdom and Jorah Mormont, who is awaiting his queen's return.

Another one who marched back home is Daenerys Targaryen. The mother of Dragons finally smelled the soil of her home, Dragonstone as her fleet arrived at the once shelter of Stannis Baratheon. As Danny and Tyrion make their way towards the throne, that’s when the rightful queen speaks, "Shall We Begin?"

Overall, the first episode had all the elements to keep our excitement piquing for the upcoming episodes. With very few central characters left and even fewer episodes to narrate the tale, it's likely that the pace of the season will be fast and a shock or revelation will be waiting for us at every turn.

PS: Keep a lookout for Euron Greyjoy, Littlefinger and Samwell Tarly as they hold the reigns to turn the events anytime with the not so visible yet crucial presence. Also, as Sam's newly found information is about to reach Jon, the much-anticipated Targaryen reunion is on cards over a pile of Dragonglass.
