Ever since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, conspiracy theories have been sparking everywhere. While some theories are by non-science folks (ranging from a conspiracy of billionaires to control the world to a mass conspiracy to end humanity), some scientists have also expressed their doubts about the origins of coronavirus disease—Covid-19, and its eventual rise to a pandemic. One strong believer of the theory that coronavirus pandemic is a human-made travesty is German scientist Dr Roland Wiesendanger from the University of Hamburg. He has published a 105-page long document listing his reasons why coronavirus possibly leaked from a research lab in Wuhan.
He blames the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) for the leak. According to him, there is no natural host for the coronavirus which makes him suspect the virus was created in a lab. He also asserts that researchers there have been “involved in controversial ‘gain-of-function’ research to make viruses more infectious to humans.” It is important to note that he does not present any scientific proof for his claim, but bases it all on circumstances which he thinks are suspicious.
Recently, WHO revealed that possibility of a lab-leak is ‘highly unlikely.’ Other smaller labs have also made substantial, evidence-based claims that the virus attacking us right now evolved freely in nature and wasn’t created in a lab, according to Science Alert.
“I am 99.9 per cent certain that the coronavirus came from the laboratory,” Wiesendanger told German media. He bases this on China’s research not being able to find a natural host.
According to his paper, the closest relative of Covid is found in bats in Mojiang caves. As the site is 1,200 miles from Wuhan, he believes bats couldn’t have carried it there — ground zero of the pandemic. He claims that WIV scientists collected samples from the caves and brought them back to the facility. Then, it was adapted to infect and divide rapidly in humans. Faulty safety measures at the lab later resulted in a leak.
However, WHO researchers have established many animal-viruses can jump into humans.Unless further proof can be found, the exact origin of coronavirus will remain a mystery.
