England star Ben Stokes found himself in a social media storm on the first day of the ongoing Third Test between India and England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
The incident happened in the second over of India’s innings when Stuart Broad found Shubman Gill’s edge, the ball flying low to second slip. The on-field umpire gave the soft signal as out, but replays quickly showed Stokes had not caught it cleanly, thus giving Gill a reprieve. Third umpire Chettithody Shamshuddin, convinced after a couple of replays that Stokes had dropped the catch, overturned the soft signal.
This left the English side frustrated as skipper Joe Root and Broad looked unhappy with the decision. On the contrary, Stokes laughed sarcastically after the decision reversal, which resulted in a lot of chatter on social media.
But people didn’t stop at that. Several memes and jokes were cracked at the expense of Stokes.
Here are a few of them:

Later, Root was once again left frustrated as Rohit Sharma survived a close stumping call. This was another close call made by the third umpire that didn’t go down in England’s favour. Root was seen having an argument with the umpire where he was heard saying: “We just want some consistency.” That the third umpire made a decision in a haste without taking a look at the multiple angles left the visitors furious.
India (99/3) trail England (112) by 13 runs at a loss of three wickets ahead of the second day’s play on Thursday.
