Internet and social media influencer culture has opened up so many off-beat avenues of income. Some of them are obvious, like skin-care gurus or tech-gurus and so on, but some are quite baffling. There are people who earn thousands and millions by eating in front of a camera (like mukbang) or even live-streaming their daily routines. But did you know sleeping in front of a camera could be a great career opportunity? At least for one Taiwanese influencer, it was the quickest way to go viral and earn way more than her usual revenue.
ET, who is a former member of the Malaysian girl group AMOi-AMOi, is now a prominent social media influencer. She recently joined the live-stream platform Twitch where people broadcast everything from video game to paintings or even them watching another show — all live to the audience.
During one of her Twitch live streams, ET accidentally fell asleep. While she was off in dreamland, her follower count and ad-revenue multiplied impressively. According to AsiaOne, in just one night, the woman made over NT$2,000 (INR 5,224).
ET is popular on social media for “frank” and “real” content as she openly talks about going under the knife and using cosmetic surgeries to enhance her looks. While most influencers hide these things, she flaunts them openly, resulting in a sincere fan-following who appreciate her for her honesty. She has over 177K followers on Instagram, and 77K followers on Twitch. But following her sleeping-video virality, the number is constantly increasing.
According to the livestream stats, around 11,000 viewers tuned in to watch her sleep. She thinks the number may or may not be reasonable, but many will definitely envy this “easy way” to earn money.
In a similar case, another Twitch user found a way to earn some money and followers while sleeping. Asian Andy made over Rs 11 Lakh overnight by a simple gimmick. Challenge — he would let the audience “disturb” him as he tries to sleep if they also made a small (or large) donation. People sent loud messages, played music via Alexa, and used scare tactics to wake him.
