A Republican Congressman in the US just made an embarrassing faux pas after asking a question about an iPhone to Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, during a hearing.

Congressional hearings with tech giants in the US are usually a fun affair - Remember the memes after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's hearings, senator? Or the theatrics at Twitter chief Jack Dorsey's?

Pichai recently attended the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee hearing on ‘Transparency & Accountability: Examining Google and its Data Collection, Use, and Filtering Practices’. The Conservative-heavy Congress wanted to know if Google's search engines were specifically designed to bury conservative websites and biased against conservative voices on the internet.

Google was also questioned on being party to pushing anti-conservative propaganda. The 46-year-old was asked several unfortunate questions including why the face of Donald Trump popped up every time someone Googled the word 'idiot'.

Just like most of these hearings that are often reduced to personal Internet 101 lessons for tech-impaired Congress men and women, this one failed to ask some of the more pertinent questions. But Iowa Republican Steve King went one step further and asked Pichai a question that wasn't just irrelevant to the hearing but also an embarrassment.

King asked Pichai why his 7-year-old granddaughter's iPhone was spammed with images of him surrounded by questionable language and imagery while she was playing a kids' game. To which the Google chief replied, "Congressman, iPhone is made by a different company. And so, you know, I mean..."

The faux pas elicited a round of laughter on the internet with netizens wondering how it was possible for King to not know that iPhone is made by Apple and not Google.
