Pantone is back with it's annual 'colour of the year' and this time the message is once again loud and clear - environmental conservation. The colour standards company has chosen "Living Coral" as the colour of 2019.

The self-proclaimed authority on colour has been announcing the annual colour trend for 19 years now. The 2018 colour was Ultraviolet. Remember all the shades of purple and mauve that you spotted on the runway last year?

However, according to Pantone Vice President Laurie Pressman, the colour of the year was not a trendsetter but a reflection of trends. The colour that Pantone chooses after careful analysis of the year's global colour trends and preferences becomes pop colour of the year. Many factors including socio-economic trends, new technology and trends in fashion, art, design, architecture and social media influence the colour.

Pressman told Quartz that this year, the ruling influence was "the arresting beauty we see in nature and the importance of preserving the environment". The optimistic shade of coral is supposed to represent living corals, a species that is rapidly dying out from the planet.

"In its glorious, yet unfortunately more elusive, display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent colour mesmerizes the eye and mind," Pantone said in a press statement. "Lying at the centre of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, Pantone Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of colour."

Pantone Colour Institute includes a product development and merchandising wing that consults with brands and advices them on colour trends. It's no wonder then that Apple recently released iPhone XR's coral variant in the market. The New York Fashion Week Spring 2019 also saw a burst of soft coral with several designers such as Marc Jacob embracing the colour among other pastels.

This is not the first time that Pantone has turned to nature for inspiration. In 2017, it had chosen 'Greenery' as the colour of the year. Meanwhile, celebrities have already started getting spotted wearing coral.

Expect to see more of the playful, energetic hue on more gadgets, clothes, accessories, websites, brochures and walls this year. Meanwhile, the decision has been appreciated by conservationists and nature enthusiasts.
