In case you missed it

In a big blow to the Centre, the Supreme Court reinstated Alok Verma as the CBI director on Tuesday, three months after the government stripped him of his powers and sent him on forced leave in a midnight swoop.

The court, however, said Verma cannot take any major policy decision till he is cleared by the high-powered committee which selects and appoints the agency director. But Verma can still carry out investigations or file chargesheets.

The two-day nationwide general strike began today and is likely to disrupt normal life as transport, bank and other services have been affected in several cities. The bandh has been called by 10 trade unions across the country against what they believe are "anti-labour policies of Modi government". Workers from the power, steel, auto, and financial services sector will participate in the 'historic event'. Find out how different cities were affected by the Bandh on Day 1 only on News18.com.

The controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, which seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, was passed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday amid vehement opposition by BJP allies and rivals alike.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday formed a five-judge Constitution Bench to hear the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi title dispute case. The bench, to be headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, will decide on Thursday when to take up the politically sensitive case.

Nor does he have the backing of the Bombay club. But, the Maharashtra Chief Minister has been able to emerge as a ‘leader’ in his own right. That’s because like any deft politician, he has successfully managed contradictions within and outside his coalition government. Venkatesh Kesari writes about Fadnavis's political journey.
