Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Leh to inaugurate the Leh-Srinagar transmission line and Nimmo-Bazgo hydro electric project. Dressed in a traditional dress, Modi addressed the locals sitting beside Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Although his speech focussed on strengthening tourism in Kashmir, Modi found himself the butt of astonished derision on Twitter the moment the news agency ANI and subsequently other TV channels posted photos of him in a metallic golden dress wearing a local headgear.

Modi has previously worn traditional dresses of several Indian states while he was campaigning ahead of the general elections. He has come under attack for refusing to wear the Muslim skull cap. While the digs at him were essentially harmless, it did rub off wrongly users who took offence to tweets ridiculing a state's heritage.

Modi, who is on his first visit to Leh and Kargil after assuming office, also addressed soldiers in Leh and assured them that a National War Memorial will be built. It is common custom for state heads to respect local tradition by wearing indigenous headgear and dresses.

This is what people had to say about the shiny gold traditional dress
