Over Tea and Cigarettes: A Kolkata band that is as indie as indie could be

‘Over Tea and Cigarettes’ is a troupe of four Bengali musicians who have a knack for hitting the right chord and playing the right note and voicing the perfect harmony

Sometimes, music manages to transport you into a different world altogether; somewhere far away from home and yet somewhere not altogether unfamiliar. This indie-folk band from Kolkata, with its acoustic melodies and soothing fluid vocals, manages to do exactly that.

‘Over Tea and Cigarettes’ is a troupe of four Bengali musicians who have a knack for hitting the right chord and playing the right note and voicing the perfect harmony. Anik Nag (lead vocals and guitar and harmonica), Abir Chowdhury(lead guitarist) Adrik Banerjee (piano, harmonica, melodica) and Sourjyo Sinha(rhythm guitarist and backing vocals) together create music which according to them is ‘as indie as indie could be’.

The band derives its name from something as intrinsic to the essence of Kolkata as roshogolla itself, adda over tea and cigarettes; and gets its musical kick from bands like Kings of Convenience, Bon Iver, Youth Lagoon and artists like Alex Turner and Damon Albarn.

They have played several gigs in Kolkata, including one at the Jadavpur University festival called ‘Sanskriti’ and they have plans to come up with an EP soon.

Kolkata has always been a city that has been very generous towards artists. It has a thriving music scene that allows artists like them to come out in the open with their music. “The music scene sure has evolved since we started out. A lot of small-time artists have started getting the limelight they deserve. We dearly hope this trend continues.” And in that spirit, ‘Over Tea and Cigarettes’ continues to make music.
