Pakistani Journalist Mocks Sakshi Malik's Win, Gets Slammed On Twitter
It was a barrage of angry responses on Twitter on Thursday after a Pakistani journalist Omar R Quraishi criticised India's excitement at wrestler Sakshi Malik's victory.
After nearly two weeks of frustration, disappointment and heartbreak, Sakshi Malik clinching the bronze medal in the 58kg women's single wrestling event, came as a huge relief. In fact, she created history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to bag an Olympic medal. And Indians were certainly overjoyed.
They celebrated her victory by tweeting congratulatory messages to her, sharing their emotion and sentiment on making the country proud at the world event, but guess one person wasn't very happy with this emotional outpouring on Twitter. It was Pakistani journalist and the editor of digital properties at Pakistan's Samaa TV, Omar R Quraishi.
He mocked India's first medal at the Rio Olympics in a series of tweets.
Finally one of the 119 competitors that India sent to Rio has won a medal - a bronze - now see how they portray it as if they won 20 golds— omar r quraishi (@omar_quraishi) August 18, 2016
For a population of over 1.25 billion India managed just one bronze medal - Norway with 5 million managed 2 -- tch tch tch— omar r quraishi (@omar_quraishi) August 18, 2016
My timeline would suggest that there is something mentally wrong with many Indians - cannot take criticism even if it's well founded— omar r quraishi (@omar_quraishi) August 19, 2016
His tweet infuriated a lot of Indians. Several prominent personalities, including legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, took to social media to condemn Quraishi's bitter words and give him an epic response.
For me it is worth a 1000 golds and even that is not enough. Pride for Sakshi, proud that she is Indian and a woman https://t.co/io5JyaMTUP— Amitabh Bachchan (@SrBachchan) August 18, 2016
Tch tch tch....this coming from a nation where not even one player could qualify for olympics https://t.co/BRYmTZ14xl— Manak Gupta (@manakgupta) August 18, 2016
@omar_quraishi One medal gets pakis jealous. A few more and you might run to U.N. crying like you do about kashmir😂— Sanjil Vashist (@Sanjil_v) August 18, 2016
@SrBachchan proud I belong to a country where 119 people have entered the Olympics unlike Pakistan which is still trying to enter India!— Sharmila Ravinder (@supershamz) August 18, 2016
Agree. Our athletes win not due to govt policies but in spite of them. That's why we mustn't mock their achievement https://t.co/qrpNtFMFXf— Shekhar Gupta (@ShekharGupta) August 18, 2016
@omar_quraishi sir, what is your problem? Can't be happy for your neighbour? Live and let live— vivek raj (@vivekrajindia) August 18, 2016
The point was that it takes a bit of sporting spirit to appreciate the efforts athletes whichever country they are from.
