'Poo-phoria' is gross but real: Passing a large stool can be compared to an orgasm, Indian doctor says

Dr Sheth told reporters: 'The stool high is relatively safe, but can become an addiction for some.'

Don’t let this gross you out. An Indian doctor in Princeton has said ‘poophoria’ or a ‘stool high’ is the experience of passing a large stool that can feel like an orgasm. Scientifically, he explained that a large enough stool distends the rectum so it touches the vagus nerve.

Princeton gastroenterologist Dr Anish Sheth, the co-author of the book ‘What’s Your Poo Telling You?’, was quoted as saying in media reports that “To some it may feel like a religious experience, to others like an orgasm, and to a lucky few like both."

The Mirror said, quoting from the book, when the movement is big enough to distend the rectum, it can stimulate the vagus nerve, usually associated with having an orgasm.

Sheth said the feeling of ‘poo-phoria’ that can accompany a large movement - is caused by a drop in heart rate and blood pressure, which decreases blood flow to the brain.
