"Australia's fifth bowler has been India's shot selection," said Mark Butcher during commentary, and the Indian batsmen proved the former English Test player right.
KL Rahul, Murali Vijay, Virat Kohli, and Ajinkya Rahane went for expansive drives early in their innings, only to get themselves dismissed by being caught behind or in the slips.
Despite the Indian debacle, Chesteshwar Pujara stood his ground and compiled 123 runs out of India's 250/9 at the stumps. Pujara's patient knock earned praises from fans on both sides. However, the second highest scorer in the batting line-up, Rohit Sharma, wasn't as lucky as Pujara. The player's score of 37 runs for 61 balls included two boundaries and three sixes, yet it was the way in which he got dismissed that disappointed many.
But what exactly did Sharma do?
The star batsman top-edged a Nathan Lyon ball to Marcus Harris, who was standing at deep square leg. The dismissal came after Harris caught the previous ball over the boundary line, also hit by Sharma, which was adjudged a maximum.
Many called it Sharma's very own 'brain-fade' moment and were critical of his soft dismissal.
New candidate for brainfade of the day. One hit to the fence almost caught, fielder Harris just fails to let go of the ball as he crosses the ropes. Same shot again next ball, Harris runs in off the ropes and takes a straightforward catch. Rohit Sharma blows it #AUSvIND— Anand Vasu (@anandvasu) December 6, 2018
Sharma six and out.— Peter Lalor (@plalor) December 6, 2018
Been some shite shots today but that’s the shite-est.
Given six when Harris attempts catch on boundary rope one ball, attempts same following delivery and H catches it easy.
Sharma c Harris b Lyon 37 (61b)
Rohit Sharma 37 with three sixes before the midpoint on day one of the series ... and then skies Lyon to Harris behind square leg. Brainless is a term that comes to mind #AusvInd— Daniel Brettig (@danbrettig) December 6, 2018
Flat deck, bowlers just starting to bowl long spells and you give away your wicket.— Nikhil 🏏 (@CricCrazyNIKS) December 6, 2018
Rohit Sharma has to really get into red-ball cricket. Can't get another decade to crack it.
At this stage of his career, Rohit Sharma must look at every Test match opportunity as a rare privilege. Can’t be squandering opportunities like this. #AUSvIND— Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) December 6, 2018
