The internet never runs out of weird, unsual phenomena to wow netizens. The latest doing the rounds is an image of an ell on a seal.

It may sound like a funny alliteration from a nursery rhyme but an eel on a seal is actually one of those strange animal phenomenon that seems to have scientists baffled. It all started after an image of an eel, a type of invertebrate aquatic animal, stuck to the nose of an infant Hawaiian Monk seal, appeared on Facebook. The unusually cute image was posted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program with the caption, "Mondays...it might not have been a good one for you but it had to have been better than an eel in your nose,"

The group explained that the phenomenon was something that they had reported on.

It appears that baby Hawaiian Monk seals have a tendency to get eels stuck to their noses. Though the research team has found several infant seals in these predicaments, scientists have not yet been able to find any particular causes for why this may be happening.

Hawaiian Monk seals are a highly endangered species limited to the islands of Hawaii and active conservation work to protect their numbers has been on for the past forty years.Just about 1,400 of them exist today. However, according to NOAA Fisheries in the Pacific Islands website, this phenomenon has only been occurring over the recent years. It could be because the seals are foraging animals who search for their food in corals and sea beds and may end up snorting an eel by mistake.

The Facebook post by the researchers assured readers that each time a seal was found with an eel on its nose, it was restrained and the eel carefully separated from the seal. While no harm had ever come to the seals in such procedures, the eels usually never made it.

Weird as the phenomenon may be, the image started a laugh riot on social media and the poor seal soon ended up as a meme.
