In an incident that has since been going viral, three activists and members of the fringe group Hindu Mahasabha have been arrested in Agra after they tried to offer prayers inside the Taj Mahal premises on the occasion of Maha Shivratri.
The incident occurred in Agra, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. The three were apprehended by CISF officers when they were offering prayers inside the premises and were later handed over to Tajganj Police in Agra.
The men have been arrested IPC section 153-A which deals with promoting enmity between different groups. The three arrested Mahasabha members included Meena Diwakar, Jitendra Kushwaha and Vishal Singh. According to a report in the Times of India, the trio entered the Taj Mahal premises on Thursday with a bottle of water which they offered to the Sud god besides a central tank on the premises. It was when they were headed to the main mausoleum to offer prayers that they were intercepted by CISF.
The arrest was followed by protests by the Hindu Mahasabha whose members reached Tajganj police station and demanded the release of the three arrested members.
According to the report, Kushwaha and Singh were remanded to 14-day judicial custody while Diwakar was given notice and sent to get medical attention after she reported feeling ill.
Meanwhile, a BJP MLA from Ballia’s Bairia constituency in UP, Surendra Singh, has stirred controversy by demanding that the name of Taj Mahal be changed to honour Ram or Shiva.
