Watch: The 'Urban Poor' Phenomenon Explained Through Stick Figures

Can we address the elephant in the room?

By now you've probably read the Buzzfeed article about the 'Urban Poor' or have at least heard the term being used or just the idea being discussed through innumerable op-eds and think pieces. But if you don't, 'Urban Poor' was a term used by Gayatri Jayaraman to describe metropolitan twenty somethings who live in comparative poverty because of their lifestyle choices and their willingness to give priority to appearances instead of needs.

People all over have talked about it since the article came out. Some agreed, some disregarded it, and a large number of people called it a sham. They shamed the term and the people being referred to in the article. The general arguments ranged from 'They are not actually poor', to 'They are stupid' to 'This term is disrespectful towards actual poverty'.

In all the arguments though, people missed out on one simple point: It is still something that actually exists and it is still something that is a major problem. Getting judgmental on millennials is really not the way to go about it.

Through a video with stick figures and a simple analogy, YouTube user Abhishek Madan explains how 'Urban Poverty'is a legitimate thing and how most of us completely lost the plot and did not address the topic at hand. Watch the video right here:
