It's another end of the year and time for the latest YouTube rewind video and this time, YouTube's theme was "Everyone Controls Rewind". However, this year's video seems to be performing a lot worse than its previous years' counterparts if the reactions on social media are any proof.
Since its release 18 hours ago, the video has already received 2 million 'dislikes' at the time of writing, something which no YouTube Rewind video has ever had to face.
The video is being slammed for not including many of the biggest stars and phenomenon on YouTube this year, despite claiming that this year's video was based on popular demand. Many criticized the dry narrative style and also the music and graphics which failed to impress netizens. And the constant Fortnite plugs? Fans felt that the makers should've left the online gaming sensation alone or at least kept the game references a bit subtle.
Questions were also raised on the segment about mental health. YouTubers such as Lilly Singh 'Superwoman' and others raised the point about how YouTubers came out about mental health problems and issues. However, the segment ended a bit too abruptly with many left questioning if the segment was just hastily plugged in as an afterthought.
Fans also missed popular stars like PewDiePie who was missing from action, as was Mr Beast. While the video was appreciated for highlighting the animators on YouTube, patrons trashed the rest of the video for its boring narrative and absence of many stars. Several users complained that the people featured in the video were not even that popular and were, in fact, unknown to a large number of people.
Some of the events that fans wanted missed included Logan Paul and Briton KSI, Shane Dawson’s documentary, and the epic feud between PewDiePie and T-Series.
In short, YouTube got roasted on YouTube and pretty much the entire Internet had something to say.
#YouTubeRewind is trash. No references to #ShaneDawson, “Black Panther”, “This Is America”, Pewdiepie vs T-Series. No Ariana, no 88rising, no Trisha for mukbang. And you shove in a cringey recreation of “Idol” without mentioning BTS’ name AFTER deleting views on that exact video?— Riddhi Chakraborty (@thisisridz) December 6, 2018
Yikes this years rewind was ass. Don't you just love it when YouTube has no mention of their biggest creator for 2 years now. "giving the people what they want" shut up no one wanted this shit lmao. #YouTubeRewind pic.twitter.com/2HMPrgQOtd— Emilia (@FakemiliaETH) December 6, 2018
Apparently BTS are nothing but “kpop” artists. Yt divided trending mvs of 2018. They put kpop in a separate category. What was the point?¿ When are they gonna see that BTS is more than “kpop”. BTS have covered almost all genres. The xenophobia is showing. #BTS #YouTubeRewind pic.twitter.com/0SgAYFSds2— MinYParkJ (@jiminsugabias) December 6, 2018
Things missing in #YouTubeRewind:@TrishaPaytas doing a Mukbang@AndrewSiwicki filming @ShaneDawson with @JeffreeStar@TanaMongeau’s TanaCon@ArianaGrande’s #ThankUNext@YesTheory’s Burrito prank with @ItsBradSousa@DavidDobrik’s flame thrower@LoganPaul vs @KSIOlajidebt— Chris San Miguel (@chrisgsanmiguel) December 7, 2018
so #youtuberewind really thinks that it's okay to use BTS and IDOL after deleting 11milion views, froze our views for more than an hour and hiding our REAL views by puting (+45millions) huh! pic.twitter.com/cIpq08riZy— (@namjnxrm) December 7, 2018
However, many including several of the YouTubers who were included in the video shared their gratitude toward the platform.
them: "So for this year's #YouTubeRewind you're going to be dressed as goofy 1920s waiters in @MollyBOfficial's dog's dream where you're lovingly serving him a feast with @RosannaPansino." us: "YES. Wonderful. Couldn't have been cast more appropriately." pic.twitter.com/GZS7TIYYNl— The Try Guys (@tryguys) December 6, 2018
You know what? I liked this. It knew that it couldn’t please everyone and ran with that. It focussed on a small handful of creators, tried it’s best to be self aware, didn’t push any particular agenda, and didn’t overstay it’s welcome. I think this was a good one ♀️ https://t.co/QWA0L35OC6— Thomas ‘TomSka’ Ridgewell (@thetomska) December 6, 2018
If you have made it this far, here's the rewind:
