Now students studying at the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) can choose to study subjects out of the boundaries of their programmes. IGNOU has introduced course-wise registration and certification scheme which allows students to register for specific courses without having to register for an entire programme. Under this scheme, students can register for a single course or a number of courses which might not be part of one single programme. Students can opt for interdisciplinary courses to a maximum of 16 credits.
Candidates successfully completing the course opted will be provided with a certificate of completion of the course indicating the score obtained in continuous or term-end assessment and credits earned. Candidates will be allowed to seek transfer of credits earned under the scheme by taking admission in a programme of IGNOU.
The eligibility for registering for a course under the scheme will be the same as the eligibility for admission to the programme from where the course(s) are drawn. Registration for all courses of all the academic programmes will be open for registration under the scheme except the courses offered under research degree programmes and awareness and appreciation level programmes.
Students will have to take courses offered in combination together. Courses once opted can not be changed or withdrawn by the student. The minimum and maximum period allowed for completion of the courses registered would be six months and two years, respectively.
Meanwhile, IGNOU has also started offering courses to foreign students. In the first phase, IGNOU has planned to offer 16 online programmes to overseas students from SAARC, Non-SAARC, and FSRI, and NRI students. Courses offered to international students include MA in Hindi, MA in Gandhi and Peace Studies, a certificate in tribal studies, PG diploma in Gandhi and Peace Studies, a certificate programme in Arabic language, MA of translation studies among others.
