London: Tottenham fired manager Andre Villas-Boas on Monday, a day after the club slumped to a second heavy loss in the Premier League in less than a month.

Tottenham said an "agreement has been reached" with Villas-Boas "for the termination of his services."

The pressure ratcheted up on Villas-Boas after Spurs collapsed to a 5-0 loss at home to Liverpool on Sunday, bringing back memories of their 6-0 defeat at Manchester City last month.

The result left the London side in seventh place in the league after 16 games, five points from the fourth Champions League spot.

"I won't resign and I'm not a quitter," Villas-Boas said after the Liverpool match.

The 36-year-old Villas-Boas has been in charge of Tottenham since July 2012 after replacing Harry Redknapp. He was previously manager of Chelsea but was fired after eight months.

Tottenham have struggled this season despite spending more than 100 million pounds ($160 million) on mostly attacking players in the offseason, with the club looked to stay in contention for the top four after Gareth Bale's sale to Real Madrid.

"We wish Andre well for the future," Tottenham said in a short statement. "We shall make a further announcement in due course."
