Beginning this week, whenever Argentine Lionel Messi or Brazilian Neymar score goals in official football tournaments, including the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, it will result in access to school meals for more 10,000 children in Latin America and the Caribbean Islands.

Backed by the well-known company MasterCard, who announced on Thursday that they will donate 10,000 school meals to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) each time the Argentine or the Brazilian score a goal.

"I am very proud to be a part of this campaign, it will help change the lives of thousands of children and I hope that it will produce just as many smiles," Messi was quoted in Marca.

The Brazilian superstar Neymar also declared himself "happy" to be able to help in this noble cause. "We want to ensure that the children of the region can have a plate of food and more hope," he said.

"We Latin Americans know we can do great things when we unite and this is an example of that. Together, we can fight hunger."

MasterCard spokesperson Ana Ferrel noted how this project would be very beneficial for many people in the region.

"More than 40 million people throughout Latin America suffer from hunger, many of which are children," she said.

"Combating hunger and child malnutrition is a way to support education and is key to reversing the cycle of poverty.”

"This Initiative, referenced as #JuntosSomos10, or 'Together we are 10,' is part of an initiative that was kick-started by Mastercard in April 2017.

Apart from the contributions that will come about due to goals scored by both the superstar forwards, interested people can donate online and use social media to spread the word.
