Srinagar: RR Bhatnagar, the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), has told CNN-News 18 that special security arrangements were being put in place for the security of Amarnath pilgrims after Monday night’s deadly terror attack. Bhatnagar said buses bound for Amarnath would be taken off roads after 7 pm and taken to safe locations. They would only be allowed back on the road when a security convoy was available.

“There have been various review meetings and we have done assessment of what went wrong. We found that the system was well laid out for the security of the Yatris, for the convoys and for ROP duty. The system was well advertised but we found that certain people were not part of that system,” he said.

Bhatnagar added, “The mechanism was there earlier also and now we are strengthening it. We will stop vehicles that are not moving within the timings for which protection is available. J&K Police also have their apparatus in place, which will strengthen. We will take those vehicles off the road and to a safe location. We will put them back on the road at the times when the convoy is going or the ROP is there”

When asked if this meant the buses would be off roads post 7 pm, he said, “You see, it is a long highway. There are places where people from the Yatra go for touristic purposes and stay at different locations. The effort is on to ensure that at key times on the highway, whoever comes they are advised not to move and are taken to a safe location like transit camps, CRPF locations and police locations.”

Giving details about the neutralization operation, which led to the elimination of three terrorists, he said, “It was a joint operation with the SSP of Badgaum, the 2nd Rashtriya Rifles and the CRPF’s Quick Response Team (QRT). The operation lasted 7-8 hours. It started in the early evening and concluded at 4 am with the elimination of three terrorists. The boys did a great job. They showed their skill, training and bravery.”
