Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday moved the Supreme Court for the appointment of an “independent person” as the Chairman of the Cauvery Water Management Authority, and full-time members of the CWMA.

The move comes just two days after the state assembly came down heavily on the Central Water Commission chairman, who also holds the additional charge of the CWMA head, for giving Karnataka permission to prepare detailed project report for the controversial Mekadatu reservoir.

DMK chief MK Stalin had also slammed the Tamil Nadu government for allowing a “part-time chairman” at the CWMA on Friday, prompting the state to take legal recourse.

In its petition, the statement government asked the court to issue appropriate directions to the union ministry of water resources to appoint an independent person as chairman and pointed out that the CWMA was constituted six months ago, but has still not been established in a full-fledged manner.

The Tamil Nadu government has also moved the apex court with a petition seeking directions to withdraw the CWC permission granted to Karnataka for the detailed project report for the reservoir.

It also moved a contempt plea against the Central Water Commission as well as the the ministry of water resources and Karnataka Water Resources Minister for violating the final Cauvery dispute award in February 2018.
