Bhopal: Within days of announcement of farm loan waiver in Madhya Pradesh, another farmer committed suicide, taking the toll to two.

The debt-ridden farmer, identified as Prem Raghuwanshi from Shajapur district, had consumed some poisonous substance on December 20. He was taken to a hospital in Bhopal for treatment, where he breathed his last on Monday.

Raghuwanshi had reportedly procured a loan of over Rs one lakh from two banks and had also borrowed money from private lenders.

On December 22, 45-year-old Juvan Singh from Khandwa district had hanged himself owing to a debt. Singh’s family later claimed that he had taken a loan of Rs 3 lakh after March 31 this year. But his loan could not be waived off as only the loans procured before March 31, 2018 come under the scheme.

Expressing grief over the death of the farmer, Congress MLA from Kalapipal, Kunal Chaudhary, said: “Our government has waived off farm loans. If any of the farmers still have some issues they can come forward and share it with the state government,” he said, urging the farmers to be patient.

Around 34 lakh farmers are expected be benefitted from the loan waiver of the Congress government. However, the BJP has alleged deceit saying large number of farmers who pledged loans after March 31 won’t benefit from the loan waiver scheme.

Earlier on December 17, the newly-appointed chief minister Kamal Nath had announced to exempt the debts of farmers across the state.
